It depends on what industry you want to work for. If you are going to work at the retail management level you want to do it in the industry you want to work in. If you are interested in the food industry, you don't want to be the manager or a clothing store and vice versa. Yes, if applying for other low skill jobs. Not so much when applying for higher end jobs. Having worked at McDonalds is somewhat of a stigma in that mostly only desperate people apply there as a last resort.
